Did you miss me? I’ve gone “Legally Blonde”…
Well, actually, legally grey would be more like it. Imagine me with a fluffy novelty pen, writing out notes with love hearts for punctuation in a wide range of pastel shades. Reece Witherspoon carried a small lap dog round her University. I'm just like her.
But it is not quite like that. The lap dog in my tote bag is a Westie, and to be honest, too fat to carry round the campus. The class of 200 people appears to be all under the age of 20, apart from me and a nice man called Alex who sat beside me, wearing a woolly hat and laughing at the same things. "When your mum and dad ask you for legal advice...." the lecturer advised, and I did not hear the rest of the sentence. "I graduated in 1999," the lovely young man said, as Alex and I rolled our eyes.
Why am I doing this? Well, because I can. Because they gave me an unconditional acceptance. Because I am in awe of a few women lawyers, like Sarah Erskine, Sarah Lock, and Laura Dunlop. I'll never catch up with them but their defence of human rights inspires me, and I'm going to learn as much as I can. The tutor said, "You have a choice, and if you want to be a barrister you need to do Civil Law and learn about the Romans." And because I am only sixty something and going to the Bar would be great, I said yes.
